Bonar is a soon-to-be 20 year old Bro from Gisborne, who has been living it up in Wellington for the past two and a half years. He currently keeps very busy as the General Manager of Maya Bar, as well as assisting with co-ordinating dance parties and various promotions around Wellington.
Bonar, are you in a relationship or are you single?
I’m single; the hours I work tend not to be very conducive to meeting new people, let alone spending time with anyone. I’ve only ever had one relationship with a guy, and that was a while ago.
Are you currently looking for somebody?
I wouldn’t exactly say I'm looking. I'm pretty easy going – if something presents itself, I won’t say no! I tend to take things very slow and see where they go first. I’ve been going on a few lunch/dinner dates of late with someone, so we’ll see how that goes!
Would you say you’re more of a wine and dine or a root and scoot kind of guy?
Haha, I somehow knew this would come up! I would like to consider myself one who is more the wining and dining type, and I do spend most of the early part of my week (when the clubs not open) out and about in the city eating and drinking. My favourite new restaurant is Osteria Del Toro on Tory street, well worth checking out! I don't consider myself a root and scoot kind of guy, but we've all done it at some stage. I think I'm more interested in meeting new friends at the moment, though.
Is there a difference between the kind of guy you’d have a one-night-stand with, compared to the kind of guy you’d like to go out with?
Yep, definitely! For me, one-night-stand material would be a guy who’s either in another city, or a visiting tourist, who’s ridiculously good looking, can dance his arse off, and can maybe even be a tad cocky, I love a good challenge. Oh, and he has to be a bottom!
Whereas, someone who I’d consider relationship material is generally someone closer to home; very intelligent, has a good grounding and knows who they are and where they come from, is realistic, hard working and reliable. Of course being good looking is also a bonus, but looks are of lesser importance. : )
What's something unusual that you find attractive in guys
Posture! I can't stand guys who sit all slumped, or mope around with their hands in the pockets, or who can't walk with their shoulders back.
Would you consider yourself a prude?
Haha, definitely not! I'm pretty open to trying or doing anything, but anyone who knows me would say that I can be ‘proper’ when required. But, I’m a loose party child most of the time!
Who is your celebrity crush?
*Laughs* People are going to say something about this, but my celebrity crush would have to be Robert Pattinson. I’m huge on eyes, and his sultry eyes and dark features just make me squirm.
Have you ever slept with a woman?
Yep, it has only been a year since I first slept with a guy. I’ve had two girlfriends in the past, one of whom I was with for a long time back home, and one here in Wellington. It’s not like I just woke up one day and thought "oh, I'm gay" though, the last girlfriend understood I was attracted to guys too, and she was comfortable with that, after she left for Auckland I started to pursue guys, and haven't looked back!”
Is there a woman you would go straight for?
Definitely Angelina Jolie. I have a thing for bad-ass chicks: tattoos, black leather, dark features.
Where in life would you like to be in 5 years time?
Owning my own tech/progressive house nightclub, I think. With the way I’m going at the moment, it could well and truly happen, too. It’d probably not be a gay club most likely. They have their place, but it’s definitely not a scene I would want to have to spend time in 24/7.
Can you tell us a bit about your coming out experience?
Seeing as I have had two decent relationships with girls, who on both occasions had met with my parents, thought my parents would be oblivious to the idea. My good friends/workmates in Wellington have known for a good couple years now, and so has been the norm since I've been here. But, I went through a very difficult period earlier last year, and really needed to be able to talk to my parents about certain things, but felt I couldn’t relate to them properly as they had no idea of the issues I dealt with on a day-to-day basis. So, Easter weekend last year I invited my parents and four other siblings down to Wellington for a few days, during which I explained to them that i was gay. It went really well. They were sweet with it and if anything thought it was really cool. My mum later told me how an ex boyfriend used to be a bouncer at a gay club in Aussie, and that she had many lesbian and drag queen friends! I’m very close with all of my family, and I love them to pieces.
