Congratulations to Chaz Harris who won Stuff.co.nz's Blog Idol 2 Competition. Chaz on Ricky Martin's coming out:
After reading the news that Ricky Martin has "come out" and finally revealed to the world what many people assumed and speculated to be the truth, I couldn't help but crack a smile. It just proved the truth behind my blog post as part of Stuff.co.nz's Blog Idol 2 competition about "Celebrity Narnia" and how many people in the limelight are discouraged from being themselves because who they really are doesn't fit the mould of success.
Well everyone, Ricky Martin is gay, and you know what? I like him ten times more than I did before - I respect him. It took a lot of guts to tell the world that, especially since his Latin culture still often forbids Homosexuality. So even if it did take him until the age of 38, good on him! There was a sense of total freedom and enlightenment in his comments about it that made me sense these things cannot be rushed, only when we are truly comfortable in ourselves should this news be made public. Although his career "peaked" back in 1999, it will still be very significant news because of the strong following he still has in the Latin music community. If he wasn't a Gay Icon before, he certainly is now! Especially since he is a father of two, does that make him the first openly gay mega-famous single parent??
A quote by Martin Luther King, Jr. that Ricky tweeted sums it up for me "our lives begin to end the day we become silent about the things that matter". Too true Ricky, too true!
